Define the Cheeks with Cheek Fillers By Dr. William Cohen on July 27, 2021

female with well-defined cheeksWhile some individuals are born with barely visible cheekbones, others may see the area sink or hollow out as they age and natural collagen stores are depleted. In either case, many turn to dermal fillers to provide the volume and definition they desire.

Dr. William C. Cohen offers cheek fillers, like JUVÉDERM®, to add volume to the cheeks, while lifting and smoothing the area so that it appears more youthful. Individuals in the Orange, CA, and Placentia, CA, area who want to enhance the definition of their cheeks can learn more about cheek filler treatment and how long treatment results should last.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable solutions that are placed beneath the skin to fill in sunken facial features, enhance definition, and/or smooth out lines and wrinkles. Dr. Cohen offers a wide range of dermal fillers, including Restylane®, Perlane®, and BOTOX® Cosmetic. While each of these cosmetic solutions is effective, JUVÉDERM is often the dermal filler of choice for the cheeks.

JUVÉDERM is a jelly-like substance that is made up of hyaluronic acid. JUVÉDERM is similar to many other dermal fillers, but it contains a more concentrated solution that provides longer-lasting results. When injected into the cheeks, JUVÉDERM plumps and fills the skin the way collagen would.

What to Expect during Treatment

Cheek filler treatment is a fast and straightforward procedure that typically takes about 20 minutes. During the procedure filler is injected just beneath the skin of the treatment site.

On average, each cheek is given a series of two to six injections of filler. Dr. Cohen will determine how many injections each patient receives based on how severely the cheeks are depleted, and the degree of volume the patient desires. The needles used for injections are small, but we offer topical anesthetic or numbing cream to ensure that our Orange patients stay comfortable throughout their procedure.

Cheek Filler Recovery and Side Effects

Cheek filler treatment doesn’t require any downtime for recovery. In fact, patients are free to return to work or other regular activities immediately after treatment. While the risk of complications is minimal, it is important that people avoid touching their face and refrain from sleeping on their cheeks the first few days following treatment, so that the filler can settle.

Individuals may experience some minor side effects in the days following filler treatment. Common side effects of filler treatment include:

  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Light bruising

How Long Do Results Last?

Immediately following cheek filler injections, patients should be able to notice some results of treatment. Within a day or two the filler will completely settle and the full effects of treatment will be apparent. On average, cheek fillers last a minimum of six months, though JUVÉDERM tends to last even longer. As filler results diminish, patients can return for maintenance treatment.
