Rhinoplasty Can Help Widen a Narrow Nose By Dr. William Cohen on February 28, 2021

A woman looking at her noseWhen the size and shape of the nose appear out of proportion with the rest of the face, it can throw off facial balance and affect confidence. The rhinoplasty procedure refines the nose, improving facial symmetry and enhancing overall appearance.

One common reason people seek rhinoplasty from Dr. William C. Cohen at Advanced ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery is to achieve a narrower nose. Dr. Cohen offers rhinoplasty for a narrow nose at both of his Orange and Placentia, CA, locations. If you would like to find out if rhinoplasty is right for you, we welcome you to schedule a consultation.

What Narrow Parts of the Nose Can Rhinoplasty Treat?

Rhinoplasty, commonly called a “nose job,” can be performed to make a narrow nose wider. For some, this may mean widening the bridge of the nose, while others may be interested in widening their nasal tip or nostrils.

Rhinoplasty may be used to address a single area, such as a narrow bridge, or any combination of narrow areas, such as a narrow bridge and narrow nostrils. With that said, let’s take a closer look at how rhinoplasty can widen the nose.

Widening the Bridge of the Nose

The bridge of the nose is the bony part of the nose that sits below and between the eyes. When this area is narrower than desired, it can be widened by augmenting the shape of the bone structures that make up the bridge of the nose.

In order to change the shape of the bridge, grafting of the upper nasal bones and cartilage may be needed to add mass and refine the nasal bridge.

Widening the Nasal Tip

For those who feel the tip of their nose is too narrow or pointy, rhinoplasty may be used to create a wider, better shaped tip.

The nasal tip may be widened by using grafts to reshape the cartilage, forming a slightly more bulbous tip of the nose. The angle of the nasal tip may also be adjusted, resulting in a more flattering angle and better definition of the shape of the nose.

Widening the Nostrils

Rhinoplasty may also be used to enlarge the size of narrow nostrils. This procedure is generally performed by removing a small amount of tissue at the base of the nose. The nostrils can then be pulled in and stitched back in place, improving the width and shape of the nostrils.

Seeing Results After Rhinoplasty

Although the nose will immediately look different after rhinoplasty, final results can take several weeks or longer to finally appear. This is due to the swelling and bruising that is to be expected after surgery.

Most swelling goes away within the first few weeks of surgery, but it can take up to a year for any minor residual swelling to fully resolve. Even so, patients can expect to see an improvement in the appearance of their nose once the initial swelling and bruising clears. Their nose will be better proportioned, complementing their other facial features.
