Patients who wish to reduce or eliminate deep folds, creases, fine lines, and wrinkles can benefit from Restylane®, a popular and effective injectable treatment available at The Skin Center in Orange County, CA.

Today, Dr. William C. Cohen and our team will discuss Restylane results as well as aftercare, risks, and benefits of this treatment.

What Is Restylane? A Brief Overview

Like other dermal fillers, Restylane is designed to minimize the appearance of aging and add shape and volume to the facial features. However, unlike more traditional options, such as Hylaform® and collagen, Restylane is a gel-like substance derived from a non-animal source called hyaluronic acid. This substance is found naturally in the human body; therefore, there is virtually zero chance of an allergic reaction.

Restylane is versatile and can be used on several areas of the face. For example, this filler can reduce sagginess under the eyes and lines around the mouth. It can also plump up the cheekbones, lips, and chin for a more contoured, defined appearance. This treatment can be performed quickly, in under 30 minutes, at our office.

Restylane Aftercare

Fortunately, no downtime is required following Restylane injections. In fact, most patients can return to work as soon as they leave their appointment. However, it is important to avoid extreme sun or heat exposure during the first few days, as these elements could exacerbate bruising and swelling.

Because of Restylane’s gel-like consistency, stretching the facial muscles could disturb the treatment. Therefore, you will be asked to avoid flexing these areas for 24 hours.

Maintaining Your Restylane Results

One of the benefits of Restylane is that results are almost immediately apparent. As with all injectable treatments, there will be some level of inflammation and bruising. Therefore, the full effects of the procedure will be evident a few days after your appointment.

Like all dermal fillers, retreatments will be necessary to maintain the results of Restylane. However, compared to alternative options, Restylane actually lasts longer on average, about eight months to one year. Therefore, patients who choose this cosmetic treatment option can maintain their enhanced appearance fairly easily with regular doctor visits. If, for some reason, you decide to forego follow-up treatments, the Restylane will simply absorb into your skin with no complications.

Risks and Benefits

Because Restylane is derived from a biocompatible substance, there are very few risks associated with this treatment. In fact, while other dermal fillers require allergy testing prior to treatment, Restylane does not. However, it is important to note that there is a rare, very small chance that an individual could have an allergic reaction to the bacterial proteins in the gel.

The advantages of Restylane are clear. Treatment can be performed quickly, the process is minimally painful, and it offers a simple and straightforward recovery.
