How liposuction worksLiposuction is an excellent way to remove unwanted pockets of fat from certain parts of your body. What many people do not realize is that there are different types of liposuction. Special cannulas and techniques are out there that can improve the treatment process and results for patients.

The team at our Orange County, CA plastic surgery center would like to consider tumescent liposuction in particular. We’ll first go over the basics of how it works. We’ll then give some insight into the benefits of these cosmetic fat removal procedures.

What Is Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction is considered one of the safest and most effective options for cosmetic fat removal. The procedure injects a special fluid into the treatment area before the liposuction is performed. This fluid is comprised of lidocaine, epinephrine, and local anesthetic. The fat in the treatment area firms up from the fluid.

Once the fat is firm, the plastic surgeon proceeds with liposuction as they normally would, inserting the cannula into certain parts of the body to suction out the unwanted fat.

Less Pain During Liposuction

Thanks to the local anesthetic that’s part of the tumescent fluid, patients are less likely to feel pain or discomfort during the procedure. There is less need for the patient to be completely unconscious from general anesthesia while this procedure is being performed.

Less Bleeding During Liposuction

The tumescent fluid causes the blood vessels in the treatment area to shrink. This means that patients will experience much less bleeding during this type of liposuction than they would with other forms of fat removal.

Makes Fat Removal Easier

With the fat firmed up as a response to the tumescent fluid, it winds up being easier to extract. Surgeons will find it much easier to avoid harming tissues of the body they do not intend to treat.

Makes Surgical Side Effects Less Severe

After tumescent liposuction is performed, patients tend to experience less serious post-op side effects. The bruising, swelling, soreness, and discomfort most common after surgery is not as much of an issue.

Faster Recovery Times for Patients

In addition to less serious side effects, tumescent liposuction patients wind up recovering faster. Less bleeding and less trauma during the surgery itself means the body doesn't need to work as hard or as long to fully heal.

Prevents Skin Wrinkles and Sagging After Surgery

After liposuction, some patients notice that their skin may droop or sag a little after the fat has been removed. For tumescent liposuction patients, this is generally less of an issue. Should there by any problems with loose skin or dimpling, there are skin tightening treatments available.

The Results of Tumescent Liposuction

The overall results of tumescent liposuction are excellent, and offer the greatest benefit of all: a slimmer, trimmer, better-toned frame. Patients will look great, feel great, and appreciate the beauty of their enhanced body contour.
