Otoplasty, or cosmetic ear surgery, is designed to improve the appearance of the ears. Specifically, the procedure can either pin back the ears or reduce their size. Ears that "stick out" or seem disproportionately large can be a significant source of embarrassment. Both males and females alike in this situation have made such an admission to our cosmetic surgeon, revealing the habit of trying to hide their ears under their hairstyle.
Have you ever been concerned with the shape or positioning of your ears? Dr. William C. Cohen would be happy to help you determine whether you are an ideal candidate for the otoplasty procedure at our state-of-the-art facilities in Orange County.
The Otoplasty Procedure
There are many different forms of otoplasty, including:
- Torn earlobe repair
- Earlobe reduction
- Ear pinning
- Ear reshaping
Usually, Dr. Cohen will begin by making an incision behind the ear. Then, our cosmetic surgeon will proceed to reshape the exposed cartilage and remove any excess skin or tissue. If desired, the ear will consequently be repositioned more closely to the head. Dr. Cohen will end by closing the incision areas with sutures or stitches.
Typically, adults are given a sedative and local anesthetic, while children who undergo otoplasty at our Orange County practice are administered general anesthesia.
The Otoplasty Candidate
Cosmetic ear surgery is ideal for adults, and children between the ages of four to fourteen (this is the age when tissue is most malleable). A prospective otoplasty patient should have relatively large or protruding ears, or show a demonstrated need to alter the shape, size, or appearance of the ear. As you will note during your consultation, Dr. Cohen will evaluate your medical history as much as the physical attributes of your ears.
