For patients who are looking for a non-surgical method of treating more severe signs of aging on the face, including hollowed cheeks, sunken eyes, moderate to deep lines and wrinkles, larger skin folds, and other recessed facial features, Sculptra® injections offer a potentially ideal solution. Sculptra® is a poly-L-lactic acid based injectable treatment that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2004 for the treatment of facial lipoatrophy, or facial wasting, particularly in HIV-positive and AIDS patients. However, it offers cosmetic benefits to virtually anyone who is frustrated with the conspicuous signs of aging on his or her face.

Although there are some exceptions, the vast majority of patients who are experiencing dramatic loss of volume in their facial skin are excellent candidates for Sculptra® injections. William C. Cohen, D.O. carefully evaluates Sculptra® candidates at his Orange County, CA practice, THE SKIN CENTERx, to ensure that they will safely enjoy the full range of benefits offered by this extraordinary injectable treatment.

What Is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is an injectable dermal filler made from poly-L-lactic acid, the same biocompatible synthetic material used in dissolvable surgical sutures. This distinguishes Sculptra® from fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM™, which are composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. While hyaluronic acid based fillers are excellent at filling certain wrinkles in the lower third of the face - particularly marionette lines and nasolabial folds - and other lines and folds across the face, Sculptra® is uniquely suited to treating larger areas of the face that have lost volume.

Sculptra® is commonly used to treat such regions of the face as the cheeks, the areas under the eyes, the temples, and the jaw line. Because Sculptra® is often used as part of a comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan, cosmetic treatment with the injectable is sometimes referred to as a “liquid facelift.”

Are You a Good Candidate for Sculptra® Injections?

One of the chief benefits of Sculptra® is that it is biologically inert, so it does not pose any risk of allergic reaction. As a result, most patients are good candidates for treatment. You may be a good candidate for Sculptra® injections if you:

Dr. Cohen will ask you questions about your medical history and the medications you take to ensure your candidacy for the procedure. It is important that you answer all of his questions openly and honestly.
